Ever wonder why your child can go from calm to meltdown without warning—or why you sometimes push past hunger or fatigue until you suddenly crash?

Occupational therapist Kelly Mahler has spent years studying a hidden sense that explains these patterns: interoception.

What Is Interoception?
Interoception is your body’s internal sense—a way to notice and interpret what’s happening inside you, from hunger and fatigue to stress and emotional cues. Think of it like sight or touch, but inside your body: your heart, lungs, stomach, muscles, and even joints all send signals that help you understand how you’re feeling physically and emotionally.

Neuroscientist Dr. Bud Craig brought attention to interoception in 2002, and since then research has exploded, revealing how critical it is for emotional regulation, physical well-being, and decision-making.

Why Interoception Matters for Kids
Some children (and adults!) experience interoception differently:

  • Muted signals: They may not notice hunger, fatigue, or stress until it reaches a critical point. This can lead to meltdowns, “hangry” behavior, or emotional overload.

  • Intense signals: Others may feel every sensation strongly—every muscle tension, every digestive movement—making it hard to focus or prioritize what matters.

  • Mixed experiences: Some notice physical cues intensely but emotional cues weakly, or vice versa, creating confusion about what their body is signaling.

A Simple Way to Understand It
You can think of interoception along two axes:

  • X-axis: Emotional ↔ Physical

  • Y-axis: Muted ↔ Intense

Mapping your child’s or your own experiences on this grid can help you identify patterns and respond effectively.

Practical Tips for Families:

  1. Notice first: Help your child become aware of body sensations in specific areas—hands, stomach, heart, feet.

  2. Interpret next: Connect these sensations to meaning: hunger, fatigue, anxiety, excitement.

  3. Respond effectively: Use strategies that actually help, such as snacks, breaks, movement, or calming activities.

Understanding interoception empowers families to read body signals accurately, reduce meltdowns, and promote emotional and physical health.
